Until They Bring The Streetcars Back is a
nostalgic journey back to post-war 1949 St. Paul
where the author, Stanley Gordon West, attended
Central High School. West recreates those
innocent, wistful days of ten-cent sodas, big
band music, and burning leaves. Against the
backdrop of this idyllic time, he tells a
gripping story filled with humorous moments,
riveting suspense and bittersweet love.
Through a harmless prank and a chance
conversation, high school senior Cal Gant
stumbles onto the naked face of cruelty, incest
and murder. When he attempts to befriend and
rescue a troubled girl from the mysterious
prison her life has become, he finds himself in
a heart-stopping struggle with her ruthless
father. As he struggles to concoct a scheme to
save Gretchen, he experiences self-doubt,
ambivalence and, ultimately terror. He must face
the question of how far he will go to live up to
his values and extend himself for others and,
ultimately, take the consequences for his
actions.
